A key component to our Wellness Program, is an annual physical examination. All the body systems are evaluated in an effort to recognize and treat emerging health issues. It also allows us to provide an assessment of the horse’s overall condition and health. This will allow for the opportunity to evaluate your horse’s diet, behavior and any changes since the last veterinary visit. Additionally, this examination provides a time for you to discuss any concerns that you may have about your horse’s health with one of our doctors.
Vaccinations
Vaccinations are an integral part of good equine management, helping to maximize the health and performance of your horse. Administration of appropriate vaccines to meet the individual needs of your horse is vital to the success of any wellness program. The demands of a well-traveled equine athlete vary greatly from those of a retired, geriatric horse, so it is important that you discuss with our doctors what vaccination program is best for your horse.Click here for a guide of recommended core vaccinations, as well as necessary vaccinations due to our geographic location and your horse’s travel plans.
De-worming
An important part of a preventative health program that often goes unseen is parasite control. With the emergence of parasite resistance to de-wormers, it is even more critical to include parasite control into your wellness program. A de-worming program will be tailored to your horse’s needs. Other key components to a good de-worming program are fecal examinations and environmental control measures to decrease exposure.
Dentistry
Regular dental care is essential to the long term health and performance of the horse. Equine dentistry has dramatically evolved in the last 10-20 years. As horses live longer it is important to keep them in good body condition and good performance. Lack of proper dental care results in sharp, uneven teeth that can cause ulceration of the gums, and effect a horses body condition and performance. Other things important to the routine care of your horse include:
Annual coggins test (Testing for EIA) Annual sheath cleaning Annual blood work for our geriatric patients (CBC, Chemistry)
