Sports Medicine - Our goal is to provide the best preventative care and treatment relating to issues that effect performance horses. At Riverbend Equine Medical Center our veterinarians focus on the long term health and wellness of our patients. They will tailor individual treatment and prevention plans based on the specific needs of each horse.
Lameness - We have a special interest in lameness work at Riverbend Equine Medical Center. We know that as an owner or trainer, you want your horse performing at it's best. With the most current knowledge, we offer thorough evaluation of the musculoskeletal system utilizing radiography and advanced ultrasonography diagnostics.
- Ultrasonography - Ultrasound can be a very useful diagnostic tool to aid in the evaluation of lameness and other diseases.
- Digital Radiography - Digital Radiography allows the evaluation of bones and joints in the diagnosis of lameness.
- IRAP - A newer therapy for the treatment of chronic arthritis and synovitis is Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein (IRAP). It is harvested from the horses blood and injected into the joint to alleviate inflammation and thus pain. It does so without the degradative effects that certain steroids can have on the cartilage.
- Mesotherapy - This is a therapy that is useful in horses that are showing signs of muscle soreness and tightness. It works on the cells in the muscle and surrounding subcutaneous tissue to decrease inflammation and allow for relaxation.
- Podiatry - Our veterinarians work closely with some of the top farriers in the area to provide the best foot care possible. This ranges from corrective shoeing to medical treatment of many conditions that affect the equine foot. Special therapeutic shoes, pads, and boots can be made to manage various and changing foot conditions.
Prepurchase Exams - Very few horses are completely sound. Obtaining a prepurchase exam alerts a potential buyer to a horse's defects and allows them to make an informed decision on whether or not to purchase the horse. Prepurchase exams are customized based on the individual requirements of our client. Exams can vary from a simple exam which includes a thorough physical, flexion tests, or palpation of a pregnant mare; to a more extensive exam which can include blood tests, ultrasound, and radiographs.
General Wellness - The key to a horse’s health relies on disease prevention along with early detection of health issues. To help our clients achieve this we provide the basic services that will help prevent and detect disease. Many horse owners have experienced an equine medical emergency; however, many of these common situations (ie certain kinds of colic and lameness) can be prevented with annual examinations, appropriate vaccination, dental care, and parasite control. Along with providing these services separately our doctors at Riverbend Equine Medical Center have developed a comprehensive wellness program that is specifically tailored to meet the individual needs of your horse. These Wellness Programs are designed to provide our patients and clients with the services and information necessary to maintain consistent and long-term equine health. We also offer enrollement into the PreventiCare Program through Pfizer Animal Health. This is a daily de-worming schedule that can be a great addition to your horses routine health care and offers the colic assurance program which will cover up to $5,000 on colic surgery.
